The reverse is true for positive events, pessimists will believe them to be temporary and vice versa for optimists. People who tend to give up easily believe that the causes of bad events are permanent, they believe that they will always affect their lives whereas those who are more optimistic believe the are temporary. There are three dimensions to explanatory style: permanence, pervasiveness and personalisation. Explanatory style is how we explain the cause of events. The good news is that if you tend to be more pessimistic you can train yourself to be more optimistic.
